Huston Vineyards second generation winemaker brings home two best in class awards at the Idaho Wine Competition

Huston, Idaho (June 19, 2024) – June is Idaho Wine Month and winemaker Jacob Alger has lots of reasons to celebrate. Just two years after graduating from the University of Idaho with a Food Science/Fermentation degree, his winemaking skills have enamored customers, chef’s and most recently, the judges in the Idaho Wine Competition.

Winner of Best White Wine and Best Rosé in Idaho, this prestigious wine competition included eight pedigreed judges presiding, including a Master of Wine Liz Thach who noted “I was very impressed with the quality of Idaho wines, especially some of the Grenache, Viognier, Malbec and Syrah wines I tried along the way.”  Both the 2023 Chicken Dinner White and the 2023 Huston Rosé of Grenache received Double Gold awards in addition to Best-in-Class status and the 2021 Huston Syrah a Gold Medal winner and voted best Syrah in Idaho.

Owner, managing wine-maker and father, Gregg Alger passed the primary winemaking baton to Jacob in 2022; he commented, ”Jacob has learned the business from the ground up, helping plant our first estate Cabernet vineyard when he was just six years old and has worked in every facet of the business since then. It’s great to see him achieve these accolades this early in his career.” When asked about the newest awards, Jacob commented “it has been a whirlwind journey but bringing home these awards is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the dedication and passion we pour into every bottle at our family winery.”

Huston Vineyards, established in 2006, focuses on growing and crafting world-class wines from the local Snake River Valley AVA. The tasting room is located at 16473 Chicken Dinner Road in Caldwell, open 7 days week from 12-5, where one can try these award-winning wines. Huston is owned and operated by Gregg and Mary Alger.
